A father may turn his back on his child, brothers and sisters may become inveterate enemies, husbands may desert their wives, wives their husbands. But a mother’s love endures through all.
~Washington Irving

A mother’s love transcends time and distance. This is probably one of the most important lessons that I learned when I was young.
Unlike most of the people I know, I did not get the chance to spend my childhood with either my mom or my dad. When my mom and dad broke up, my father showed no interest in taking care of me. This forced my mother to work in Japan and leave me in my grandparents’ care. And then goes on the usual drama that most people with so-called “broken” families experience.
Everything was fine until my eyes became open to everything that was around me. As I grew older, my longing for my mother became more obvious than ever. Thinking that my mother was inside every airplane I saw, I waved goodbye to each of them with a sad smile on my face. I felt hurt whenever I saw other kids holding their mothers’ hands, so I tried to feel contented with how my grandma held my hand in hers. Somehow, I felt a huge hole forming inside my heart - a huge hole that no one, not even my loving grandparents, could ever fill up.
I was already in grade school when I finally got the chance to come to terms with whatever I was feeling. After years of feeling numb and indifferent, I was asked to write an essay about who my hero was. Unlike most of the children my age, I did not consider writing about Rizal, Bonificao, or any prominent figure in Philippine history. I did not feel the urge to write about teachers, policemen, firemen, or other people who fulfilled their duty of serving the nation by saving people’s lives and inspiring them forever. Don’t get me wrong - I have nothing against them. I just had this strong compulsion to write about my mom.
I poured my heart into that simple writing assignment. I carefully picked every word that could accurately reflect how I felt about my mom and her unconditional love for me. I explained how I admired her strength as well as her decision to leave the country in order to make up for whatever my father could not provide me. She took the risk of living in an unfamiliar place to spoil me with Barbie dolls, feed me great food, and give me the quality education that I needed. If it weren’t for my mom, I wouldn’t have been the person that I am today.
The love of a mother for her child can never be measured by how well she handled the nine dreadful months of pregnancy. Neither can it be measured by how she managed to witness her child’s milestones or how often she attended her child’s PTA meetings. After writing that essay, I finally understood how a mother’s love can transcend both time and distance. No matter how far we are from each other or how rarely we see each other in a year, I know that I’ll always be in her heart and she’ll always be in mine. I know this sounds like a huge cliché but you’ll understand me if you feel the same way about your mother.
So mom, if you’re reading this, I want you to know that I love you so much and I wouldn’t trade you for the world. I know you didn’t see much of my childhood and you didn’t even get to hold me as much as you wanted to. But those things never stopped you from making me feel loved, special, and COMPLETE. Happy mother’s day! :)
P.S.: If you also feel a special bond between you and your mother – a special bond that only the two of you could understand – always remind yourself of how lucky you are to experience that indescribable feeling. And please don’t forget to send my greetings to your beautiful mom! :)
